Vaginitis is any inflammatory condition of the vagina, and can occur at any age. Vaginitis symptoms include itching, burning, abnormal discharge, and/or abnormal odor. Some causes of vaginitis are infections and some are not infections. Common infections causing vaginitis include bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including Trichomonas, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and small bacterial pathogens that are only detectable with molecular testing (Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma species). Some women also have recurrent or persistent infections causing vaginitis symptoms that are difficult to treat or eradicate. Noninfectious causes of vaginitis that are common include postmenopausal vaginal atrophy or thinning, which can also cause pain and/or bleeding with intercourse. These symptoms may become disruptive to normal sexual function and lead to loss of ability to tolerate intercourse. At Southland Uro+Gynecology, LLC, we routinely evaluate and treat women for vaginitis.
