A midurethral sling is a surgical treatment option for stress urinary incontinence. Women can choose from conservative management with pelvic floor physical therapy or surgical treatment with midurethral sling or urethral bulking. Midurethral sling is considered the gold standard surgical treatment for stress urinary incontinence. Most women getting a sling procedure have a synthetic mesh material or "tape" placed under the urethra to provide extra support to the urethra during activities where increased stress on the uretrha is involved such as coughing, laughing, sneezing, bending, etc. Sling procedures are short outpatient procedures with a high rate of controlling urinary incontinence. Possible complications include urinary retention requiring self- catheterization beyond 2 weeks after surgery, persistent symptomatic pain at the sling site despite pelvic floor physical therapy, and persistent symptomatic vaginal mesh exposure not releived with application of vaginal estrogen. Common types of sling include synthetic material placed in a transobturator, retropubic, or single-incision fashions, as well as native tissue removed from one part of the body and then placed under the urethra for support without using a synthetic mesh material.
