Urinary tract infection is diagnosed by meeting two criteria: first, the presence of bacteria in the urine; second, the presence of urinary symptoms such as burning with urination, increased urgency or frequency. Urinary tract infection is diagnosed with a urine specimen being analyzed for urinalysis and urine culture or PCR. Urinary tract infection is treated with antibiotics. Urinary tract infection can often be prevented with use of vaginal estrogen. Recurrent urinary tract infection is defined as 3 culture-proven UTIs within 12-months, or 2 culture-proven UTIs within 6-months.
