Use of a vaginal pessary device is a nonsurgical treatment for pelvic organ prolapse. A pessary is a synthetic (example: silicone) object that is fitted in the vaginal canal to provide support and therefore "hold up" the prolapse. Pessary use prevents the vaginal bulge from protruding beyond the vaginal opening and also releives bothersome bulge and pressure sensations caused by untreated prolapse. Use of a pessary does require regular pessary cleaning, at least once every 3 to 4 months. A pessary can be used indefinitely/lifelong by women who are happy with pessary use for management of their prolapse. Side effects of pessary use include increased vaginal discharge and odor, which may be treated with the use a vaginal gel (example: Trimo-san) that can be applied to neutralize the vaginal odor or discharge associated with pessary use. There are various types of pessary devices, and choice of device for each patient is individualized based on the patient's anatomy, amount of support the patient needs for her prolapse, and how well a specific pessary fits to provide good support that is also comfortable.
