Interstitial cystitis or bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a condition characterized by urinary urgency, frequency, and/or pain without urinary incontinence or UTI. IC/BPS affects women more often than men, especially in the setting of increased stress. IC/BPS is primarily a clinical diagnosis based on symptoms but must also be evaluated with urinalysis and urine culture to rule out UTI. IC/BPS is also treated with lifestyle, behavioral, and dietary modifications, as well as medication to decrease urinary symptoms of urgency, frequency, and/or pain.
