Botox can be injected into the bladder muscle using a camera placed into the bladder (cystoscopy) for treatment of overactive bladder, which is urinary urgency and frequency with or without urinary incontinence. Bladder botox can be performed in the office or in the operating room under anesthesia. Botox injection can be very effective. Occasional side effects include incomplete bladder emptying or urinary retention, which can be treated with self-catheterization for short period of time. Bladder botox generally lasts about 6 months, though it can range from 3 months to 9 months or longer. Bladder botox is repeated when the therapeutic effect starts to wear off and bothersome symptoms return.
