Urethral bulking is injection of bulking material into the wall of the urethra for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. Urethral bulking is performed through the urethra and is very minimally invasive. Urethral bulking has emerged as a promising adjunct or alternative to mid-urethral sling for treatment of stress urinary incontinence, especially for women with intrinsic sphincter deficiency diagnosed by urodynamic testing. Commonly available bulking materials include hydrogel (Bulkamid), calcium hydroxyapatite (Coaptite), and silicone (Macroplastique). Urethral bulking may be performed in the office or under anesthesia in the operating room.
