Sacral neuromodulation is an method of treating urgency urinary incontinence, urinary frequency, incomplete bladder emptying, and fecal incontinence. Sacral neuromodulation involves sending electrical stimulation to the third sacral nerve, which is the nerve in charge of bladder and bowel function. Candidacy for sacral neuromodulation includes an office exam and urine specimen to rule out urinary tract infection, and urodynamic testing in some patients. Sacral neuromodulation involves a trial in the office or in the operating room where a temporary lead is placed in the third sacral foramen of the lower back, connected to a temporary external battery, and then women keep track of their voiding and bowel symptoms with a diary. If there is a significant improvement of symptoms than a "full implant" is performed, which involves placing a permanent lead and battery in the lower back. Medtronic produces the InterStim device, and Axonics is another company that also produces an sacral neuromodulator device.
