Fibroids are benign smooth muscle tumors usually growing in the uterus, but can develop in other parts of the body as well. Fibroids are very common, occuring in 50% or more of American women. Fibroids cause symptoms including abnormal bleeding, painful periods and sometimes other pain and pressure symptoms due to the large size of the uterus if many and/or large fibroids are present. Fibroids can also occasionally cause fertility problems.
Best treatment for fibroids depends on each woman's individual findings and preferences. For example, some women can be treated with medications. Others need minor procedures. Some women benefit from fertility-sparing surgery such a fibroid radiofrequency ablation and/or myomectomy. Ultimately, some women with fibroids need hysterectomy for definitive management of their symptoms. As a patient with fibroids seen at Southland Uro+Gynecology, you can expect a fair presentation of all reasonable treatment options with discussion of potential risks and benefits of each option to arrive at a good treatment plan with high likelihood to help with your symptoms.
Polyps of the endometrium or cervix are common in premenopausal and post-menopausal women. Most polyps are benign. Polyps usually cause abnormal bleeding, and may occasionally cause other symptoms, such as cramping pelvic pain or bleeding after sex. Polyps are also often asymptomatic and diagnosed by coincidence when imaging of the pelvis is performed for other reasons. Not all polyps need treatment. Polyps are benign overgrowths of glands and connective tissue from the uterus or cervix.
There are various treatment options for polyps which are variations on the theme of removing the polyps. Our patients have access to all the treatment modalities for polyps including in-office removal in many cases.
